Wedding Dress Budget Calculator: Dress, Alterations & Accessories
Enter dress price, alterations, veil, shoes, undergarments, jewelry, hair/makeup, preservation, and tax. The calculator shows the all-in dress total — which is usually 40-80% higher than the sticker price on the gown alone.
The dress is never just the dress
You fall in love with a $2,200 gown at the boutique. You sign the order. The final, out-the-door total 9 months later? $4,100. The extras — alterations, veil, shoes, undergarments, preservation — are 40-80% of the dress sticker price. Every couple gets caught by this. The calculator exists so you don't.
The full wedding-dress cost stack
The dress — $1,200-$6,500
In 2026, the brackets look like:
- Budget ($200-$900): David's Bridal in-stock, Azazie, BHLDN sale, sample-sale finds, Lulus for casual/elopement gowns.
- Mid-tier ($1,200-$2,500): BHLDN full-price, Anthropologie wedding, Nordstrom wedding, mid-range boutique designers.
- Upper mid ($2,800-$4,500): Maggie Sottero, Essense of Australia, Pronovias, most boutique names.
- Designer ($5,000-$9,500): Monique Lhuillier, Oscar de la Renta, Marchesa, Vera Wang ready-to-wear.
- Couture ($10,000-$50,000+): Elie Saab, custom Vera Wang, Zuhair Murad, Oscar de la Renta bespoke.
Alterations — $300-$800
Almost never included in the dress price. A full alteration typically includes hem, bustle, bust adjustment, waist-in or out, straps adjustment. Typical ranges:
- Simple alterations (just hem + bustle): $250-$400
- Standard alterations: $400-$650
- Complex alterations (heavy beading, corset, multi-layer skirt): $700-$1,200
Book 3 fittings: first fitting ~8 weeks out, second fitting ~4 weeks out, final ~1-2 weeks out.
Veil — $100-$600
Cathedral length: $200-$500. Fingertip: $100-$250. Birdcage: $60-$150. Skip the veil entirely if it's not your aesthetic — no rule says you have to wear one.
Shoes — $80-$400
Comfortable matters more than pretty. Badgley Mischka, Steve Madden, Sam Edelman are the popular 2026 choices. You'll want a second pair of flats for the reception — budget another $40-$80.
Undergarments — $60-$200
Specific shapewear, bra (if the dress is backless, this is a specialty item), hip pads if needed. Weddingsare-specific shapewear (Kim & Co, Commando) is often required for a smooth line under the gown.
Jewelry — $50-$500
Earrings, bracelet, necklace (if the dress allows). Many brides rent or borrow to save. Rent the Runway and similar rental services offer fine jewelry for $40-$100 for a single event.
Hair + makeup — $200-$600
Trial + day-of: $300-$450 typical. High-end HMUA in major cities can push to $600-$900. See the Wedding Party Cost Calculator for the per-person HMUA breakdown for the full wedding party.
Preservation / cleaning — $150-$400
Post-wedding. Specialty wedding dress cleaning + boxing in a preservation kit. Essential if you want to pass the dress down or just keep it clean. $200-$275 is typical.
Accessories — $50-$200
Hair pins, belt, garter, something borrowed. Small-ish line, but often forgotten.
Tax + shipping
5-9% sales tax on dress and accessories. Shipping fees if the dress is bought online, though most bridal boutiques include in-store fittings.
Typical all-in totals by dress tier
- Budget dress ($600 gown): $1,100-$1,500 all-in
- Mid-tier dress ($2,200 gown): $3,400-$4,200 all-in
- Upper-mid dress ($4,000 gown): $5,500-$6,800 all-in

How to save without feeling like you're settling
Sample sales
Bridal boutiques host sample sales 2-3 times a year where showroom samples sell at 40-70% off. Follow your 3 favorite boutiques on Instagram; they announce dates 2-3 weeks ahead. Designer gowns for $800-$1,500 happen constantly at these events.
Online-direct (Azazie, BHLDN, Anomalie)
Azazie custom wedding dresses run $299-$1,200 — beautifully made, custom sizing, 6-week shipping. If you're spending $2,000+ at a boutique for something comparable, Azazie is worth a look. Anomalie does made-to-measure online for $1,500-$3,500 with more customization.
Previously-worn dresses
Nearly New Bridal, StillWhite, Facebook Marketplace. Brides list their never-altered gowns at 40-60% off after deciding to return or pivot. Dresses with tags still on, never worn. Worth a scroll if you have specific designers in mind.
Second dress
Some brides do a ceremony gown + reception dress. Nice idea if the budget allows. If not, you can dramatically alter the look of a single gown by removing the veil, swapping a jacket, or undoing a belt for the reception.
Skip the veil
Not every bride wears one. If it's not essential to your look, saving $200-$500.
Rent
Rent the Runway Wedding, BYRON LARS BOUTIQUE, and specialty wedding rental sites offer designer gowns for $300-$800 rental. Ideal for couples who don't plan to preserve the dress anyway.
Pitfalls that surprise people
Boutique deposits are usually 50-60% non-refundable
Most boutiques require 50% down at signing and 50% at pickup, and the first 50% is non-refundable once the order goes to the designer. Be certain before signing.
Alterations aren't always at the same boutique
Some boutiques have in-house alterations; others refer out. Always ask about alteration cost and location before signing. External seamstress cost can be dramatically higher.
Custom sizing is still not perfect
Custom-made doesn't mean alteration-free. Most custom dresses still need $200-$400 of final fitting adjustments.
Shipping damage happens
Dresses sometimes arrive with snags, stains, or wrong color. Inspect the dress immediately upon arrival (do not wait until 2 weeks before the wedding) and photograph any issues. You have a much stronger negotiating position immediately.
Weight changes
If you're intentionally changing your body composition before the wedding, try to hit your goal by the first fitting (8 weeks out), not the final fitting (1-2 weeks out). Waiting until the last minute costs significantly more in re-alterations.
Timeline
- 9-10 months out: Dress shopping starts. Most custom gowns take 4-6 months to produce, plus alteration time.
- 6-8 months out: Dress ordered and deposit paid.
- 8 weeks out: First fitting.
- 4 weeks out: Second fitting.
- 1-2 weeks out: Final fitting and pickup.
- 2-4 weeks after wedding: Dress cleaned and preserved.

Export the real total
Before you put down a boutique deposit, run the calculator with the dress price and everything else that's actually going to be required. The true all-in will surprise you — and knowing that number ahead of time means you can plan around it in the overall wedding budget instead of getting blindsided 2 months before the wedding.
