How the honeymoon matcher works
Seven questions, seven preference axes. Each destination carries a fingerprint β beach orientation, adventure level, cultural depth, luxury tilt, price sensitivity, trip-length sweet spot, and weather. The matcher compares your answers against every destination's fingerprint and ranks them by fit score. The bar chart shows the top three side-by-side so you are not guessing between a beach week and a mountain week.
Two couples answering the same quiz can end up with different top matches because the algorithm weights proximity on every axis. A couple that says "beach" but also "culture" and "short trip" will land on Riviera Maya (Tulum ruins plus beach, a 4-hour flight). A couple that says "beach" but also "luxury" and "privacy" ends up at Maldives. Same starting word, different destinations.
The 2026 honeymoon cost landscape
Domestic US β $3,500-$6,500 for 7 days
Hawaii runs $5,000-$8,500 for a 120-guest-wedding couple who just spent $42K in Austin and needs the flight to be short. Napa, Key West, Charleston sit in the $4,000-$5,500 band. A National Parks road trip with a nicer cabin each night comes out around $2,800-$4,500. Cheaper than you think once you subtract international flights.
Mexico & Caribbean β $4,500-$8,000 for 7 days
All-inclusive resorts in Cancun, Riviera Maya, Punta Cana, and Jamaica sit in the $4,500-$6,500 band for mid-range. Boutique hotel in Tulum or St. Barts runs $7,500-$12,000. Flights are cheap (3-5 hours from most US cities), which is why this tier is the single most popular honeymoon choice.
Europe β $7,500-$14,000 for 8-10 days
Italy, France, Spain, Greece. Flights $800-$1,400 per person, hotels $220-$400 per night mid-range, food $75-$120 per person per day. A 10-day Italy trip comes out around $9,000 mid-range, $16,000 if you are staying in Positano and eating Michelin. Cities plus countryside blends well β Rome plus a Tuscan villa, Lisbon plus the Algarve.
Bali and Southeast Asia β $5,500-$10,000 for 10 days
Flights are the killer ($1,000-$1,400 per person roundtrip), but once you land you can live like royalty on $200 per day for two. 10 days at a $150-per-night villa in Canggu, scooter rentals, daily spa treatments, the best food of your life: $5,500 all-in. Only viable if you can get 10+ days of PTO since jet lag eats 2 days of each direction.
Maldives β $12,000-$25,000 for 7 days
The top-shelf tier. Overwater bungalows run $900-$2,200 per night. Flights $1,400 and up. Food at the resort is $150-$250 per person per day. If this is the dream, start saving 18 months ahead β not 6.
Safari Africa β $12,000-$22,000 for 10-12 days
Kenya, Tanzania, Botswana, South Africa. All-inclusive safari lodges run $600-$1,500 per person per night. Flights and internal transport $2,500-$4,000 total. Most expensive trips are the most unforgettable β the return on a safari honeymoon is near-infinite if it is the trip you both genuinely want.
How to save without ruining the trip
Shoulder season is the move
Caribbean in May or early November: 30% cheaper than February. Italy in September: warmer water than June, same food, 20% cheaper than July. Hawaii in late April: no spring break, no summer peak, 15-25% cheaper.
Fly Tuesday or Wednesday
Roundtrip international flights book 15-20% cheaper when you fly mid-week. Leave Tuesday, return Tuesday. Check prices for the seven days around your ideal date β Google Flights' price graph makes this a 30-second exercise.
Resort-credit hacks
Chase Sapphire, Amex Platinum, and dedicated travel cards give $200-$600 in annual travel credits that can cover a night or two of lodging. If you are planning a big honeymoon, open a travel card 4-6 months out, hit the signup bonus on wedding spending, and use the points for flights.
Stay 7 nights minimum at resort properties
Most luxury resorts offer the 4th, 5th, or 7th night free. Weekly rates are meaningfully better than per-night rates. If you are going for 5 nights, compare against the 7-night package β often the longer stay is cheaper after the promo applies.
Honeymoon registry
Traveler's Joy, Honeyfund, and Zola let guests gift specific honeymoon experiences β a $125 snorkeling excursion, a $350 couples massage, a $75 dinner on the beach. Guests prefer this over impersonal cash because it is specific. Log incoming gifts with the Registry Tracker.
Travel insurance β do not skip it
5% of trip cost is the going rate for comprehensive coverage. It sounds like a waste β until a hurricane delays your flight, or you test positive for COVID two days before departure, or your luggage arrives in Paris while you are in Rome. Basic credit-card travel insurance is better than nothing; dedicated coverage through World Nomads, Allianz, or Travel Guard is meaningfully more robust for multi-week or multi-country trips.
Timing β when to actually take the honeymoon
Immediately after: the default. Downside: you are wiped out, you have spent 12 months saying "I'll deal with that after the wedding," and now you are boarding a flight at 6am the next morning. Some couples do a mini-moon (2-4 day local getaway) immediately and the real honeymoon 2-6 months later when they can actually enjoy it.
1-3 months later: best for most couples. PTO logistics are easier to coordinate, you have actually rested, and shoulder-season pricing often kicks in between your wedding date and your travel date.
A year later (anniversary honeymoon): works if you both have demanding jobs or a tight post-wedding budget. The upside: a year of marriage gives you both time to align on what you actually want from the trip.
Budget traps that derail honeymoons
Underestimating food: $45 per person per day for budget destinations, $95-$150 for Europe and high-tier islands. Include drinks β a $15 cocktail by the pool twice a day is $30 per person per day on its own.
Ignoring ground transportation: airport transfers, taxis, rental cars, Uber rides. Plan $200-$500 on a 10-day trip. Safari private transfers can run $800-$1,500.
Forgetting tips and gratuity: $300-$800 on an all-inclusive resort trip over 10 days if you are tipping appropriately β many US couples under-tip at all-inclusives because drinks feel "free."
Activities you did not pre-book: couples massage $250, snorkel trip $150, private beach dinner $450, helicopter tour $600. Each sounds fine alone; together they add $1,500+ to the trip and never appear in the original budget.
