Honeymoon Budget Calculator: Trip Cost Estimator by Destination
Pick your destination tier. Set trip length and travel style. The calculator estimates flights, hotel nights, food, activities, and travel insurance — and shows which line item is eating your budget. Built on 2026 travel pricing.
The honeymoon is its own project
Do not bundle honeymoon and wedding budgets. They have opposite decision dynamics: weddings get cheaper the later you book (vendors fill up, so early booking is more expensive), but honeymoons get more expensive the later you book (flights and hotels run out of cheap inventory). Use this calculator to build an independent budget, then use the Wedding Savings Calculator to plan the savings runway.
Destinations by average 10-day trip cost (2 people, 2026)
Domestic US — $3,500-$6,500
Hawaii runs $5,000-$8,500. Napa, Key West, Charleston in the $4,000-$5,500 band. National Parks road-trip style with a nice cabin $2,800-$4,500. Cheaper than you think once you subtract international flights.
Mexico & Caribbean — $4,500-$8,000
All-inclusive resorts in Cancun, Riviera Maya, Punta Cana, Jamaica in the $4,500-$6,500 band for mid-range. Boutique hotel in Tulum or St. Barts runs $7,500-$12,000. Flights are cheap (3-5 hours from most US cities), which is why this tier is the single most popular honeymoon choice.
Europe — $7,500-$14,000
Italy, France, Spain, Greece. Flights $800-$1,400 per person, hotels $220-$400 per night mid-range, food $75-$120 per person per day. A 10-day Italy trip comes out around $9,000 mid-range, $16,000 if you're staying in Positano and eating Michelin.
Bali / SE Asia — $5,500-$10,000
Flights are the killer ($1,000-$1,400 per person roundtrip), but once you're there, you can live like royalty on $200 per day for two. 10 days at a $150/night villa in Canggu, spa treatments, scooter rentals, the best food of your life: $5,500 all-in.
Maldives / Overwater Bungalows — $12,000-$25,000
The top-shelf honeymoon tier. Overwater bungalows run $900-$2,200 per night. Flights $1,400+. Food at the resort is $150-$250 per person per day. If this is the dream, start saving 18 months ahead — not 6.
Safari Africa — $12,000-$22,000
Kenya, Tanzania, Botswana, South Africa. All-inclusive safari lodges $600-$1,500 per person per night. Flights and internal transport $2,500-$4,000 total. Most expensive trips are the most unforgettable — the ROI on a safari honeymoon is near-infinite if it's the trip you both want.
How to save without ruining the trip
Shoulder season is the move
Caribbean in May or early November: 30% cheaper than February. Italy in September: warmer water, same food, 20% cheaper than July. Hawaii in late April: no spring break, no summer peak, 15-25% cheaper.
Fly Tuesday or Wednesday
Roundtrip international flights book 15-20% cheaper when you fly out mid-week. Leave Tuesday, return Tuesday. Check prices for the seven days around your ideal date.
Resort credit hacks
Chase Sapphire, Amex Platinum, and dedicated travel cards give $200-$600 in annual travel credits that can cover a night or two of lodging. If you're planning a big honeymoon, open a travel card 4-6 months out, hit the signup bonus on wedding spending, and use the points for flights.
Stay 7 nights minimum
Most luxury resorts offer the 4th, 5th, or 7th night free. Weekly rates are significantly better than per-night rates. If you're going for 5 days, check whether the 7-day all-in is actually cheaper.
Honeymoon registry
Traveler's Joy, Honeyfund, and Zola all let guests "gift" specific honeymoon experiences. A $125 snorkeling excursion, a $350 couples massage, a $75 dinner. Guests genuinely prefer this over impersonal cash because it's specific. See the Registry Tracker to log incoming gifts.
Don't skip the travel insurance
5% of trip cost is the going rate for comprehensive coverage. It sounds like a waste — until a hurricane delays your flight, or you test positive for COVID 2 days before departure, or your luggage goes missing. Basic credit-card travel insurance is better than nothing; dedicated coverage through World Nomads, Allianz, or Travel Guard is meaningfully more robust.
Timing: before, during, or after the wedding?
Immediately after: the romantic default. Downside: you're exhausted, you've spent 12 months saying "I'll deal with that after the wedding," and now you're on a flight at 6am the next morning. Some couples do a "mini-moon" (2-4 day local getaway) immediately and the real honeymoon 2-6 months later when they can actually enjoy it.
1-3 months later: best for most couples. PTO logistics are easier to coordinate, you've actually rested, and shoulder-season pricing often kicks in.
A year later: "anniversary honeymoon." Works if you both have demanding jobs or a tight post-wedding budget. The pro: you've had a year of marriage to talk about what you both actually want from the trip.
Budget traps to avoid
Underestimating food: $45 per person per day for budget destinations, $95-$150 for Europe and high-tier islands. Include drinks.
Ignoring ground transportation: airport transfers, taxis, rental cars, Uber rides. Plan $200-$500 on a 10-day trip.
Forgetting tips and gratuity: $300-$800 on an all-inclusive resort trip over 10 days, if you're tipping appropriately.
Activities you didn't pre-book: couples massage $250, snorkel trip $150, private beach dinner $450. Each sounds fine alone; together they add $1,500+ to the trip.
